Change

Grief needs time. Most men give it none.

We will all lose people. Parents, friends, partners, sometimes sooner than anyone expected. And many of us are starting to grieve something harder to name: a way of life, a kind of work, a world we thought we understood.

This guide is for both. It does not hurry you, and it does not tell you how you should feel. It gives grief some attention and some time, which is usually what it needs.

The deaths we meet

Most men are taught to carry grief rather than feel it: organise the funeral, look after everyone else, go back to work on Monday. That works for a while. Then it tends to come out sideways, as anger, drinking, silence or exhaustion.

There is no right way to grieve and no deadline. There is only paying it some attention.

A world that is changing

I believe the changes happening now are unprecedented, and that many of us will look back on this time as the end of a way of life. Work, towns, the way we meet and talk, even what we thought a man was for.

It is reasonable to grieve that. It does not make you old-fashioned or weak. It makes you paying attention.

Grieving a world that is changing

Time and attention

Grief does not need fixing. It needs time, somewhere to put it, and usually one person who will listen without trying to cheer you up. The chat can be a start. It is not a replacement for that person.

Why James

James Roberts is fifty and lives in Tenerife. He spent nearly twenty years headhunting in travel and hospitality, through wars, recessions and a pandemic, and watched an entire industry fall and rebuild more than once. He is not a counsellor. He believes grief for a changing world deserves the same time and attention as grief for a person.

Talk it through

The chat is an SI (super intelligence) guide, not James replying live. It speaks in his voice, and it will not hurry you.
